Montessori is a philosophy
and method of education, set out more than 80 years ago by Dr. Maria
Montessori. It emphasizes and develops the potential of the child by
utilizing special teaching materials, a prepared environment, and
teachers who have been trained in the use of Montessori materials and
have a solid understanding of the philosophy. Montessori recognizes in the child a natural curiosity and desire to
learn; the Montessori materials awaken this desire and channel the
child's natural curiosity into a learning experience which the child
enjoys. These didactic materials promote independence and are for the
most part, self-correcting which allows children to progress at their
own pace. Children who grasp concepts quickly are not held back and ones
who need to take more time are not frustrated. The purpose of the
material is to isolate a single concept and lead the child through a
sequence of steps. A properly prepared Montessori classroom is replete
with equipment which encompasses subjects ranging from math and language
to geography, botany, and technology.
"To provide a nurturing Montessori community where the child's full
potential is met in an integrated, inter-disciplinary environment and
where education is a valued preparation for life."
Montessori was also a great
advocate for peace in our world after living through a number of
worldwide conflicts in the 20th century. She felt strongly that the road
towards peace was through children. She felt if a child's needs were met
and they were expected to give and receive respect in a community such
as their class or school, then this respect would be transmitted to
their adulthood. This goal towards peace through education of children
is also fundamental to the whole philosophy of M. Montessori.
